Voukoum

Rebel Spirits of the Guadeloupean Carnival
Author Flore Pavy
COLLECTION Ethnologie de la France et des mondes contemporains
This movement distinguishes itself from other Carnival groups with its radical spiritual approach and the ties it claims with Africa.

Voukoum, or "disorder" in Creole, is a group that occupies a major space of social and political protest on the Guadeloupean Carnival scene. Anthropologist Flore Pavy joined the group as a musician, and here she meticulously describes the Mas, a ritual of transformation that sets Voukoum bodies in motion. Prominently featuring firsthand accounts from those involved the Carnival proceedings, this work offers a largely overlooked vision of Guadeloupean history and the singular place of the French West Indies in the general Caribbean.
