Hollywood, 1950s: 18-years-old Michael has fled his small hometown of Durango with dreams of becoming a famous screenwriter. He steps off the train, scripts under one arm, heady with the possibility of success. And indeed, through clever ideas and mischievous alliances, he climbs the ladder, sometimes with dark and strangely disturbing consequences, becoming a director's assistant on the next big-budget film noir. Ever resourceful, he even finds a location for the film on the plains of Durango. But during his meteoric rise, trouble has broken out in his hometown, involving his gang of friends and his younger brother. Filming takes place in the middle of a child's disappearance that reminds Michael of a sordid incident from his own youth.
