In a remote corner of Berry, young nurse Ariane Château starts a new job at a psychiatric hospital. To ease her commute, she rents an old house named La Dérobade, or the Hideaway, by a lake deep in the woods and uninhabited for twenty years. From the moment she moves in a strange sensation of déjà vu overtakes her, especially in the nursery, with its giant antique mirror on the wall.
Ariane discovers that the former owner, now interned in the hospital's high-security wing, was once suspected of kidnapping children, and dodged a prison sentence by pleading insanity.
When Ariane's daughter joins her on school break, weird things start happening: a man seems to slip into the house and watch them in their sleep before vanishing through the mirror. One night, the unthinkable occurs: her daughter disappears.
