These beliefs hail from another age, a midcentury postwar France that still believed itself rural and set up a dichotomy of city and countryside. They ignore the realities of an urban, mobile, connected 21st century and are ill-suited to environmental demands. Enshrined as dogma, they nevertheless continue to govern cities and territories.
