1924: While the "women’s liberation" movement shakes up Carol and Suzanne's bourgeois Parisian family, in the fish canning factories of Douarnenez, Brittany, female workers are busy organizing. High on their agenda? A strike! Yarig, a young "penn sardin" or "sardine head" (a nickname for women who worked in the canneries) gets swept up body and soul, discovering the power of collective action. Meanwhile, her sister Angèle has been sent to Paris as a maid for Carol and Suzanne's family. These four sisters, with their very different hopes and dreams, cross paths during one rip-roaring year.
