The idea of an income for every citizen is an ancient one. It would simplify administration, settle issues of precarity, and facilitate freedom of choice. Paid out to one and all from birth to death on an individual basis, without resource control or quid pro quo, it holds out the vision of a safer, fairer society.
But a UBI is a complicated project and several competing versions exist, at times dovetailing with proposals to get rid of social welfare and other protections. The organization MFRB (French Movement for a UBI) provides an overview of this important idea, informed by the many experiments performed in its name, the better to make it a tool for a truly liberating revolution.
