On the night of January 10, 2002, 24-year-old Élodie Kulik was headed home after dinner. In the morning, her car, and then her body, were found. She had been raped and murdered. A highly unusual criminal investigation began: one that lasted 19 years, through a series of gendarmes and judges. It became a landmark case, altering the law regarding genetic genealogy. It would be the first case in France to be solved using familial DNA searching, which it brought into the lawbooks.
