In order for the energy transition to succeed, we have to stop demolishing just to rebuild. In response to this need, Breathing New Life looks at alternative ways of engaging with rundown, disused buildings earmarked for demolition: residential and industrial buildings, sheds, barns, garages, bunkers, etc. The 20 international projects presented here opt for simple strategies that limit the use of materials and equipment, demonstrating a sensitive and pragmatic approach to eco-design – less technical, more inventive and more economical – that is highly beneficial to architecture.
