A dog is man’s best friend, but is man a dog’s best friend? Nothing is less certain. Examining bulls used in bullfighting, horses used in mines, and dairy cows, Éric Baratay attempts to give animals back their voices, or at least their stories. The challenge is to make them into their own subjects, even agents of history. In this innovative new approach to the traditional study of animal representations, the author proposes a history of animal cultures that is not anthropocentric.
