Sacha is fifteen when his parents announce that their family is leaving Paris for the Dominican Republic. With the idyllic Caribbean as a backdrop, he will discover far darker realiy: the mistery of people in the bateys, rural communities of fieldhands from the sugar plantations, a 21st century form of slavery. Sacha, his new friend Enrique, and the pretty Patria, a young mother only seventeen, set out on a voyage of discovery that will change the way he sees the world.
