Alice's Incredible Journey

The story of Alice Cyuzuzo's escape from the Rwandan genocide, told through the eyes of the girl she was then.

Rwanda, 1994: the central province of Gitarama. Five-year-old Alice lives a happy life with Hutu family. When genocide breaks out, they flee their village, for Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). She grows up in refugee camps, in the shadow of death, at times recovering a semblance of normal life before new attacks force them all to flee once more.
By journey's end, only Alice and her sister Adeline are left, their parents' fate a mystery. Finally, she is repatriated to Rwanda in 1997.
Gaspard Talmasse delivers a singular account of great feeling and accuracy. He has chosen to tell his wife's story through the eyes of the girl she was, the better to respect its truth.
