Given the outrageous inequality of border politicies, it is time we recognized a universal human right to mobility.

Although mobility is recognized as an essential factor in human development, two-thirds of the world's inhabitants are not allowed to circulate freely. Countries traditionally open to immigration have shut their doors if not built outright walls to protect themselves from migrants. The grotesque results of closing borders are legion. Its victims, without papers or rights, face a world of refugee camps, the crminial economy of human smuggling. Host countries face economic and demographic shortfalls tied to the lack of mobility, not to mention the exorbitant cost of policies of exclusion and expulsion. It is high time we implemented an international diplomatic model for migrations.
