The setting: a residential neighborhood in a modern-day Indian metropolis. A dozen characters from across the land find themselves gathered at the construction site for an apartment tower: Ali, a young, inexperienced engineer; Trinna, an uncompromising foreman; Rafik, Mehboob, and Salma, laborers from the provinces who dream of a better tomorrow… not to mention Ganesh and his band of Rajasthanis, Hindu tileworkers with conservative outlooks, swelling the ranks at a site overseen by a rich young developer. This cross-section of contemporary India is a theater where languages, religions, leaders, and followers play out their tragicomic fates, ever-threatened by unemployment and bankruptcy.
