Summer, 1930: a boat of seal-hunters sets out from Svalbard for Kvitøya, some of the last solid ground before the North Pole. The melting ice caps have opened up usually inaccessible areas. Nearing the island, they find bodies and a makeshift campsite, solving a disappearance that has remained a mystery for thirty-three years: the fates of Salomon August Andrée, Knut Frænkel, and Nils Strindberg when they disappeared trying to reach the North Pole by hot-air balloon in July, 1897.
