In 1960s Louisiana, blacks and white did not mingle, not even in schools. Ruby had to walk a long way to reach hers, which was just for blacks. But segregation would soon come to an end, and when she was six, Ruby became the first African-American girl to integrate into an all-white school. Upon entering the classroom, she found herself all alone… The hostility from students, staff, and teachers was just incredible. This was the beginning of a terrible year that would mark her life forever.
